I have been working on this player for a customer for a while. To be honest, it was a bear of a project. It has seen at least one refinish and at least part of another before it came to me. It had burned veneer edges all over the place and nicks and dings and scratches EVERYWHERE! The other challenge was the color. The customer wants brown mahogany instead of red. This in and of itself isn't difficult. However, with the different sanding "techniques" that happened previously made it very difficult to blend into a uniform color as some of the veneer was sanded to the point of paper thin and some was still okay - and then there were those burned edges! I toned them the best that I could and I think, overall, the finish turned out nicely. This is one I wish I would have taken a before picture of. It came into the shop literally in pieces. The next step... trying to put this puzzle back together! After this piano leaves our shop it will go to another technician to get the player, keys, and action rebuilt or reconditioned. It should be a lot of fun when it is done. I will post some more pictures once we get it reassembled.
The next project we are tackling is this Winter upright with the back corners blown out and a Baldwin Hamilton that we will be finishing in a satin black.
